What a business website actually needs in the UAE

a view of a city from a tall building

The UAE is one of the most competitive markets in the world for attention. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong from the outside, because the assumptions that hold in London or New York quietly do not apply.

Here is what we have learned building for clients in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Mobile is not a version of the site. It is the site.

Smartphone penetration in the UAE is among the highest globally, and the majority of first visits to the sites we run arrive on a phone. Not a tablet, not a laptop on a desk. A phone, often on mobile data, often mid-task.

That means the desktop layout is the afterthought, not the other way round. If your primary call to action requires scrolling past three full screens on a phone, it does not exist.

Trust is established faster, and lost faster

Buyers in the UAE market tend to evaluate credibility quickly and unsentimentally, partly because so many businesses are new and so many are foreign-owned. A site that looks like a template reads as a business that might not be there in a year.

The things that actually move this needle are unglamorous:

  • A real physical presence. An address, a landline, a trade licence number. Not a contact form floating in space.
  • Named people. Photographs and names of who will actually answer.
  • Specific proof. Named clients and real numbers beat testimonials attributed to initials.

WhatsApp is not a nice-to-have

This is the single biggest difference from Western markets, and the one most foreign-built sites miss entirely.

In the UAE, WhatsApp is the default business channel. Customers expect to message a business the way they message a friend, and they expect an answer quickly. A contact form that produces an email two working days later is not a competitive response.

At minimum, put a WhatsApp link where a phone number would go. Better, wire it into how enquiries actually reach you, so nothing sits unanswered overnight. We cover the mechanics in WhatsApp automation.

Arabic: do it properly or do not do it

Machine-translated Arabic is worse than English-only. It signals that you did not think the audience was worth the effort, which is a more damaging message than not offering Arabic at all.

Doing it properly means human translation, and a layout that genuinely handles right-to-left rather than mirroring the CSS and hoping. It means Arabic typography that is set well, not the Latin type scale with a different font dropped in.

Whether you need it depends on who you sell to. B2B serving multinationals in the free zones often runs fine in English. Consumer-facing businesses, or anyone selling to government or family-owned groups, usually should not.

Speed matters more than the specs suggest

UAE connectivity is excellent, which leads people to assume performance is less critical. In practice the opposite holds: when everything else loads instantly, a slow site feels broken rather than merely slow.

It also matters where your site is physically hosted. A server in the United States adds a real round trip to every request. Hosting in or near the region is a small decision with a compounding effect.

What matters less than people think

Two things we get asked about that rarely justify the spend:

  • Elaborate animation. It reads as expensive for about four seconds, then it is in the way of the phone number.
  • A blog nobody maintains. Three posts from 2023 actively signals a business that lost interest. Better to have none.

Where to start

If you are launching in the UAE, get four things right before anything else: it loads fast on a phone, it says who you are and where you are, WhatsApp works, and the enquiry reaches a human quickly.

Everything else is refinement. See how we work with UAE businesses, or book a call and we will tell you honestly which of these you already have.
